[New Faculty] Associate Professor, Dr. Ryosuke Iritani

Name: Ryosuke Iritani
Affiliation: Laboratory of Mathematical Science for Computing
Position: Associate Professor

Profile:
I received my Ph.D. in Science from the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences at Kyushu University in March 2016. From September 2016 to February 2019, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Exeter (UK) and UC Berkeley (USA).

I then joined RIKEN’s Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program (iTHEMS) as a Research Scientist in March 2019, becoming a Senior Research Scientist in April 2023, and continued in this role at the newly established RIKEN iTHEMS Center from April 2025. After a brief period as a Project Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo starting in April 2026, I took up my current position in July 2026.

My research focuses on using mathematical models to explore and analyze phenomena in biology, especially evolutionary biology, ecology, and evolutionary genetics. I also study the mathematical structures of biodiversity indices and their practical applications. Recently, I’ve become very interested in proposing new mathematical concepts and theories inspired by biology.

Message:
I am broadly interested in science – not only biology and mathematics, but also information science, economics, philosophy and social sciences. Please feel free to talk to me if you are interested in, and enthusiastic about, solving problems using mathematics!
