Curriculum and Environment
Three reasons to study here
-
-
The course curriculum is at the international standard. It is
divided into four layers: “Foundations and Theory”, “Basics of
Computers and Software”, “Networks and Media” and “Artificial
Intelligence and Data Science.” Individual lectures are distributed
into these layers as appropriate. Students proceed through the layers,
obtaining knowledge at each level that they build upon in later
lectures. Practical skills are trained through programming exercises
and a yearlong class focusing on experiments that meets three times
per week. The graduation thesis provides students an opportunity to
demonstrate and use the knowledge they’ve obtained.
In graduate school, students build upon the knowledge they’ve already obtained and mainly focus on doing individual advanced research. In addition to the core subjects and classes available in this division, students gain breadth by studying a secondary subject. This gives students the opportunity to learn both in depth and breadth. Combined with the focus on individual research, this explains why many of our graduate students go on to become leading researchers and engineers.

- Sapporo is frequently chosen as one of the best places in Japan to live. Hokkaido University is conveniently located a short walk from Sapporo Station, and boasts a large campus despite being in the center of a large city. Considered one of the most beautiful in Japan, campus is green in spring and summer, yellow and red in autumn, and covered in fresh snow throughout winter. Such an environment is ideal for study and research, and also provides many opportunities for relaxation. University facilities are completely satisfactory: a variety of modern lecture rooms, libraries, and several kinds of experimental facilities. This allows students to concentrate on their work. Mountains and the sea are less than an hour from campus. Living expenses are relatively low compared with other large cities and commutes are also short. Hokkaido is particularly known for delicious, affordable food.

- Our professors are very active in their fields. As leading researchers, they organize and chair famous international conferences and often give invited talks. They also have individual personalities and enjoy looking after students. Some receive teaching awards as the best teachers in the university. This is because they deliver understandable lectures. Our hope is that our students grow both academically but also as humans, and we enjoy spending time working with our students.

MessageIn research activities, you will often encounter situations in which you are difficult to solve problems in a straightforward manner. At such times, it is important to find a research field that you are interested in for powerfully promoting your research activities. This course offers a variety of classes, so you should first find a research field that you are interested in through these classes. Once you join a laboratory, I hope that you will get know-how to advance your research by repeatedly communicating with faculty members as if you were playing catch with them.
