Analysis of Massive Environmental Data

The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident has greatly effected our lives.  Radiation is invisible but cannot be ignored, and radiation levels have been monitored throughout Japan since the accident.  There are more than 4000 real-time monitoring posts in Japan,  measuring radiation levels in the air every 10 minutes.  Monitors are also placed on buses and public vehicles in Fukushima, measuring local radiation levels every 3 seconds.  There are additional measurements of radiation levels in soil, seawater and food; resulting in a  massive collection of data that continues to grow.  These measurements include noise and results reported by defective devices.

We seek to obtain valuable information from this data, including the identification of hot spots, evaluating the effectiveness of decontamination, and predicting future radiation levels.  There is no simple theory that can answer such questions and we approach them using a combination of machine learning, statistics and computer science.  We are developing effective methods for state-of-the-art data analysis based on statistics by carefully examining the data.  We hope that this research, undertaken in close cooperation with relevant experts, is a valuable contribution to society.
